Bistek (Filipino Beef Steak)
My husband always as in ALWAYS loves my version of bistek or beef steak (in Filipino cuisine). He is definitely a “steak” lover and this beef steak is no exeption. This is actually called bistek tagalog which originally has a dark watery sauce and hubby doesn’t like his bistek that way so I tried cooking it almost the same way as how I cook my adobo, only that there’s some sauteing in this process. When he tasted it, he wants his bistek cooked that way all the time.
INGREDIENTS:
beef, thinly sliced and cut into strips at about 2 inches
dark soy sauce
kalamansi/lemon juice, no seeds please
garlic, crushed and sliced
ground pepper
onions, sliced into rings
a dash of sugar
oil
METHOD:
1. In a bowl, combine the dark soy sauce, lemon and garlic. Adjust according to your taste (but honestly, I don’t taste my bistek not even my adobo while I cook
).
2. Add in the beef strips and let sit for about 15-30mins.
3. In a skillet, heat the oil and lightly fry half of the onion rings. Take them off, dry in a kitchen towel and set aside.
4. Drain the beef and garlic, reserving the marinade for later. Using the same skillet, saute the remaining onions and the beef and garlic for about 2 minutes. Pour in the marinade, cover and let it dry a bit. When only more than half the marinade is left, add a dash of sugar, mix and cover again.
5. When almost dry, pour in some oil and let the beef fry a bit. Serve and garnish with the onion rings set aside earlier.
This is my way of cooking my bistek. I don’t want the beef directly fried in oil before adding the marinade because we want our beef soft and we want it a bit oily in the end, no watery sauce.
Now let me go ahead and I’m still gonna find the best joint supplements because hubby has been complaining about joint pains these past few days.
Head on to Food Trip Friday for more food trippings!!!
