The Do’s & Don’ts of feeding your baby

I was talking to a friend whose baby has just started on solid foods at 6 months. In the Philippines some Pediatricians already give their nod at 4 months but in London most Pediatricians would recommend to wait till your baby turns 6. There are do’s and don’ts about feeding your baby and I made a few guidelines here which I follow at heart. But please remember that this is just my guidelines and not rules written in stone.

The DO’s

  • Discard unfinished meals right away as bacteria forms quickly
  • Be extra careful when using the microwave to warm your baby’s food for there are usually uneven hot spots.
  • Make sure you give your baby vegetables and fruits first before introducing  any meat.
  • Ice cube trays for pureed foods are safe. Once frozen you can place the cube in a resealable

plastic bag

  • Juice should be introduce for babies over 6 months
  • Always start with a single ingredient food to allowyou to determine if baby has any allergic reaction to a particular food.
  • Wait 3 to 5 days before introducing new food
  • Use a baby spoon and only give a small amount each time
  • Make meal time a happy time.

The DON’TS

  • Don’t feed egg whites to babies under one year of age because of the potential allergic reaction it may cause
  • Never force your baby to eat. They will most likely eat when they’re ready and hungry
  • Don’t used canned vegetables as these are usually loaded with sodium
  • Don’t add salt or sugar
  • Don’t feed the baby directly from the jar.
  • Don’t use cookies as a pacifier for a crying baby
  • Don’t give any foods containing honey

Don’t be afraid to get messy. Your baby will have more fun eating if you’ll be more creative when introducing solid food. Now on to my motorhome repair hunt again. Happy Eating!
